Design & Technology

Design and Technology projects allow pupils to combine practical skills, problem-solving skills and creative thinking in order to design and make innovative and artistic products and personal responses. 

These projects will focus on building dexterity and manual skills, as well as encouraging students to be creative using a variety of methods for realising and explaining their ideas.

Design and Technology at HCC stands out because of our amazing specialist resources and commitment to hands-on learning. Students have access to:

  • A fully equipped workshop.
  • 3D printers and laser cutter for precision design
  • CAD/CAM software for digital design and modelling
  • A wide range of tools and machinery for wood, metal, and plastic work

These resources allow students to take their ideas from concept to creation, developing real-world skills in design, problem-solving, and making. Assessment

KS3:

At the end of each cycle, students complete an End of Cycle Assessment. This includes a design task where they apply creative thinking and problem-solving skills, along with a drawing element to communicate their ideas clearly.

KS4:

Students are assessed through coursework and a practical exam. The coursework involves a design project, from initial research and concept development to making a final product. The practical exam tests students' ability to create a pre-designed project under timed conditions.

Progression & careers

Studying Design and Technology and 3D Art and Design opens up a wide range of exciting career and educational opportunities after GCSE.  Here are a few potential pathways:

Further Education:

A-Level or BTEC:
Students can pursue A-Level Design and Technology, Art and Design, or 3D Design to deepen their creative and technical skills.

Creative and Design Courses:
Courses like Product Design, Architecture, Industrial Design, Graphic Design, 3D Animation, or Fine Art can be pursued at college or through vocational qualifications.

Careers:

Product Design:
Designing consumer products, gadgets, or furniture for companies or as an independent designer.

Architecture and Urban Planning:
Combining design skills with technical knowledge to shape buildings and urban environments.

Graphic Design/Animation:
Using creative skills to produce visual content for advertising, media, games, and film.

Fashion or Textile Design:
Creating clothing, accessories, and fabric patterns.

Interior Design:
Planning and designing spaces for homes, offices, or commercial buildings.

Engineering:
Product engineers and manufacturing specialists apply design skills to create functional, practical products.

Fine Art and Sculpture:
Combining creativity with hands-on craftsmanship to create artistic pieces in 3D.

These subjects nurture problem-solving, creativity, and technical skills, making them valuable for any career where innovation and design are key.
